DUI license suspension from DMV
Question: Will a driver’s license suspension or revocation from another state show up if a new license is obtained in California? My husband and I are originally from New York city, but we are planning to relocate to Los Angeles, California. A few years ago, my husband was arrested for a DUI and had his license suspended due to a chemical test refusal. It was then revoked for 1 year after a DMV hearing.
If we move to California and he obtains a new license in California, will his driving record transfer? Is he going to have any issues doing this? Do suspensions and revocations remain on the driving record permanently, or will they go away after a certain period of time?
Thank you in advance for your anticipated response.
Save your drivers license from a DUI based suspensionAnswer: Most states share DMV records with California as part of a “compact”. I am fairly certain that New York is part of that compact of sharing DMV records. In most situations, if your license is suspended in one state and you try to relocate to California, California will see the suspension and inform you that you need to clear up the issues in the other state before CA will issue you a driver’s license.
That being said, once in a while things slide past the DMV, but I would not count on it.
That being said, I am not sure of your issue. If your husband’s drivers license was suspended for one year, a few years ago, than unless there is another issue, the suspension time should have lapsed. Is your concern focused around Insurance premiums? or enhancement issues if he gets another DUI in California?
