July 4th is one  of my favorite holiday weekends.  From getting together with friends and family, to bbq and fireworks.  It is also a holiday weekend known for a lot of DUI arrests, and this July 4th weekend is unlikely to be any different.  The Los Angeles Police department is apparently setting up DUI checkpoints throughout Los Angeles county this July 4th weekend including Western Avenue, Hollywood Blvd., Figuera Street., as well as Oxnard and Laurel Canyon in North Hollywood.

DUI checkpoints are locations set up by arresting agencies such as LAPD that pull over drivers and ask them preliminary questions in regards to drinking.  Generally there are several officers and patrol vehicles that set-up cones in a road block like fashion.  As cars approach the checkpoint, officers funnel the cars through a line.

Generally speaking, when traffic is busy, they should let cars go by without questioning them so there is not a big traffic build up.  As the area where the pulled over cars were funneled too clears out, they then direct one or more cars into the area for questioning.

If selected as a vehicle that gets questioned, the initial contacting officer may decide to send you to a second station at the checkpoint for further questioning and potentially field sobriety tests.

The safest thing to do is to have a designated driver escort you around if you are drinking.  But if you are arrested for a DUI, it does not necessarily mean that you have to be convicted of a DUI.
