Santa Maria Police officer is killed by another officer while facing arrest
A Santa Maria police officer identified as Albert Covarrubias Jr. who was under investigation for being suspected of having a sexual relationship with a 17 year old girl and intimidating potential witnesses was shot and killed by a fellow officer as he was about to be arrested. The officer was nearing the end of his shift at a DUI checkpoint when supervisors arrived to detain him at approximately 1am on Saturday morning. By that time, detectives had enough information to arrest the officer, who would have been booked on multiple felony counts. Officer A. Covarrubias Jr. was allegedly resisting arrest, drew his weapon and fired, when another police officer on the scene then followed by fatally shooting him in the chest.
